Billie Jean King and World TeamTennis

"The WTT format closely parallels my philosophy in life.  It’s all about men and women competing together on equal terms.  In WTT and in my life we push for innovation, we strive for excellence and we want to set a high standard both on and off the court." - Billie Jean King
Billie Jean King co-founded World TeamTennis in the 1970s with Larry King. She has played an integral role in WTT since developing the popular co-ed format and the League in the 1970s.
King played for six teams (Philadelphia Freedoms 1974 - player/coach; NY Sets 1975, 1976; NY Apples 1977, 1978; Oakland Breakers 1981; Los Angeles Strings 1982; Chicago Fyre 1983, 1984) and was assistant coach for the Delaware Smash in 1996. She was a member of WTT Championship teams in 1976, 1977 and 1983.
In 1974 she became the first woman to coach a professional team with men when she served as player/coach for the Philadelphia Freedoms. Ten years later she became the first woman commissioner in professional sports history when she took over the helm at WTT. In 2005, as part of a celebration of the first 30 years of World TeamTennis, King was one of four players named to the WTT All-Time All-Stars Team.
Currently she is the majority owner of the League and remains actively involved with all WTT programs. King is one of the League’s most ardent supporters and has often voiced her belief that the World TeamTennis format should be used in other team competitions such as the Olympics and college tennis.
