‘Battle of the Sexes’ gets it right – mostly

I’ve got a special relationship with the film “Battle of the Sexes” because I was there in the Astrodome that Thursday night – Sept. 20, 1973 – as a credentialed member of the media and because, before that surreal evening, I had not seen a tennis match in person. I remember thinking, “This is a really strange sport.”
And my reaction to the film, which opened in Houston last week and stars Emma Stone as Billie Jean King and Steve Carell as Bobby Riggs, was, “This was a really good movie.” I can’t, however, speak to its appeal to a person lacking the profoundly fond memories I have of covering all the silliness, so you will have to make up your own mind on that.
