Legislators to consider giving Long Beach native Billie Jean King the Congressional Gold Medal

Officials are introducing legislation that would honor Long Beach native Billie Jean King with the Congressional Gold Medal for her contributions to athletics, women’s rights, the LGBT community and American culture. One of the authors of the bill, Rep. Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, said King defined the role of women in sports.
“She has not only earned this honor—she deserves it for the ground she has broken and the paths that she has set,” Lowenthal said in a prepared statement.
