Every Labor Day weekend for the past four decades, film fans and industry insiders descend on (ascend to?) Telluride, Colorado, for the Telluride Film Festival, a four-day celebration of cinema and its makers. Known for its intimacy and careful curation, the festival has, over the years, become a crucial stop on—or, often, the starting point of—a successful awards campaign. Of the last nine best-picture Oscar winners, eight have screened at Telluride, giving the festival a reputation as something of a kingmaker.
