In 1973, when I was 12, I was at my father’s house in Los Angeles when he clicked on the TV to watch Billie Jean King play Bobby Riggs. The event was billed as tennis’s “Battle of the Sexes,” and I watched what I hadn’t seen before—a woman on the court playing a man.
